The History of Physiotherapy: From Healing Hands to Modern Movement Science

At Physio Fit Studio, we’re proud to be part of a long and fascinating history — one built on the belief that movement is medicine. Physiotherapy has evolved over centuries, from humble beginnings in ancient healing traditions to a modern, evidence-based profession that helps people move, live, and feel better every day.

Where It All Started

The roots of physiotherapy can be traced back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations such as China, Greece, and Egypt used massage, hydrotherapy, and exercise to treat pain and injury. The Greek physician Hippocrates (often called the father of medicine) was one of the first to promote manual therapy and the healing power of movement.

However, modern physiotherapy as we know it began in Sweden in the early 19th century. Per Henrik Ling, often referred to as the “Father of Swedish Gymnastics,” developed a system of exercise and movement to promote health and physical recovery. This laid the foundation for what became known as physiotherapy or physical therapy.

How Physiotherapy Came to Australia

Physiotherapy found its way to Australia in the early 1900s, influenced by the British model of rehabilitation. The profession gained significant momentum after World War I, when thousands of soldiers returned home with injuries requiring long-term rehabilitation.

Women, in particular, played a major role in shaping the early Australian physiotherapy profession — many were trained as “reconstruction aides” to help soldiers regain movement and strength. These early pioneers helped establish Australia’s first physiotherapy schools, with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) officially forming in 1906.

Why It Became So Important in Australia

Australia’s strong focus on sport, outdoor activity, and physical health made physiotherapy a natural fit. From rehabilitating soldiers to helping athletes and everyday Australians stay active, physiotherapists became an essential part of the healthcare system.

Over time, physiotherapy expanded beyond hospitals and rehabilitation centres into private practice, sports clinics, aged care, women’s health, and community health. Today, physios work across all areas of the population — from elite athletes to children and older adults managing chronic conditions.
