13 Nov Healing and what can influence it.
A physical injury is defined as “damage to a physiological structure” typically as a result of a fall, hit or trauma. This is referring to the physical aspect of the injury itself. Healing from an injury unfortunately is not as simple as experiencing an injury. Healing from an injury comprises not only the physiological damage to the structure but also social and psychological factors… that’s right – your mental state and social stressors can impact your ability to heal!!!
The Biopsychosocial Model
This is described in the biopsychosocial model typically implemented in chronic pain clientele. This refers to medical conditions not simply being what’s happening from a biological perspective, but also the psychological and social factors influencing the ability to heal from injury.
The Physical
The most obvious factor! Anything which is physiologically damaged and needs to heal.
- structure damaged
- Current medical history
- Chronic conditions
- Past medical history
- Family medical history
The Social
Social factors comprise of what in your day to day life play a role.
- Socio-economical
- Socio-environmental
- Work factors
- Family circumstances
- Social circumstances
- Economical factors
The Psychological
These are the emotional aspects of life which can contribute to the healing trajectory of an injury. This includes but not limited to;
- Coping skills
- Trauma
- Social skills
- Mental health
- Self esteem
- Perspective
- Relationships
