Can Exercise Ward Off Cold and Flu Symptoms?

Can Exercise Ward Off Cold and Flu Symptoms?

It’s winter, it’s cold, and your couch is looking very inviting. But before you bunker down under three blankets with another cup of tea, let’s answer a hot question for the cold season: can exercise help prevent colds and flu?

Short answer? Yes—but there’s more to the story.

When cold and flu season hits its peak (hello August), most people reach for the usual prevention tricks: flu shots, extra vitamin C, and gallons of lemon and ginger tea. But regular exercise is often the forgotten secret weapon.

Here’s why it matters. Moving your body regularly helps you:

  • Manage weight
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce stress

And guess what? All of these help support a strong immune system, which means you’re more resilient when the sniffles start circling the office or school.

But what if you’re already feeling unwell? Should you still work out?

Here’s a quick guide:

  • Above the neck symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, mild sore throat)? You’re usually fine to exercise—just keep it light. Swap your sprint for a stroll.
  • Below the neck (chesty cough, upset tummy, fever, fatigue)? Sit it out. Your body needs rest, not reps.

In fact, a few days off won’t wreck your fitness. Listen to your body. And when you’re ready to return, ease back in—no hero workouts required.

Bottom line: Exercise won’t make you bulletproof, but it’s a powerful tool in your winter wellness kit. So layer up, stay active, and keep those germs guessing.
